The question “whats for dinner”
has been asked in every kitchen
since kitchens were in caves.
Today there are many time saving
conveniences that were not
available when they had only and
open fire and a stick to hang the
meat on.
As many families find less and
less time at home, it has become
necessary to come up with a way to
cook a tasty meal, in one pan and
be able to come home to a prepared
meal.
The crock pot has made this
possible, and they are probably
one of the most used appliances in
kitchens today. While wanting
convenience, we still require
flavor in our foods.
Most recipes can be adapted to
cooking in a crock pot, choose
your favorite, then find a similar
recipe in a crock pot cookbook and
adapt in that way. Here are a few
tips on adapting:
*Dairy products have a tendency to
break down when cooking for long
periods of time, here are a few
adaptations you can try:
Condensed soup with powdered milk
takes the place of cream.
Adding evaporated milk during the
last ½ to one hour
Sour cream or cheese should be
added just before serving.
*Unless cooking rice, cutting your
liquids by about half is
necessary, crock pots dont boil
away the liquids like stove top
cooking does.
*Use your similar recipe for
several things:
Deciding on cooking time
Sizes of cut up vegetable
Ingredient quantities, including
liquids.
*Cut vegetable pieces and place in
bottom of pot first
*Trim visible fat from meat, cut
to fit pot and place on top of meat
*Mix liquids and seasonings a pour
over meat
*Using less tender cuts of meat
like pork shoulder or beef chuck
are ideal as both become tender
when cooked slowly in moist heat
Family dinner doesnt have to be a
fast food experience, as you adapt
your families favorite foods to
crock-pot cooking!
